An increasingly tense climate is settling in at Olympique de Marseille around Mason Greenwood.

In the summer of 2024, Manchester United no longer counted on Mason Greenwood, weakened by extra-sporting matters. A situation which Olympique de Marseille quickly took advantage of, which positioned itself without delay and made an offer of around 26 million euros to convince the Red Devils to sell their player.

Arriving at Canebière, the English striker made a long-term commitment by signing a five-season contract, until June 30, 2029. Established for almost two years in Marseille, the number 10 led by Habib Beye is now going through a more delicate period internally. His recent performances, notably this Saturday during the trip to Nantes, were not enough to calm the ambient climate around his status.

Greenwood-Benatia, it’s complicated

According to The Teamrelations between Greenwood and Medhi Benatia would have deteriorated significantly, to the point of a breakdown in dialogue that had been taking place for several months. The 24-year-old right winger would also have seen his role evolve downward after the departure of Roberto De Zerbi, made official in February.

Behind the scenes, however, an important development is expected. Benatia, who had initially announced her resignation before ending the season, will leave her functions at the end of the exercise. An exit which could ease internal tensions, even if Greenwood’s future at OM still remains open.
