The presidential election of FC Barcelona confirmed the dazzling popularity of Joan Laporta among socios. From the partial count, it was clear that the outgoing Catalan president was going to win, accumulating almost 70% of the votes while only three quarters of the ballots had been counted. The final results confirmed this trend. In fact, Laporta collected 68.47% of the votes, while his main rival, Victor Font, was limited to 29.52%, with 2.01% of blank votes. This vote illustrated the massive support of members for the vision and project of Laporta, who has been pursuing for several years a strategic plan focused on the sporting and institutional strengthening of the club.
The context of this election was marked by internal tensions and deep debates on the future of Barça. Victor Font proposed an ambitious alternative, promising a more transparent and modernized club. The campaign was intense, with particular emphasis on the revival of the first team and financial management. The return of supporters to the Camp Nou and recent sporting performances clearly influenced the vote, underlining how much the emotional and sporting attachment of members can weigh in a club election.
Font is disgusted
For VĂctor Font, this result constitutes a shock and a surprise. The gap between the two candidates exceeds what he anticipated, and he must now analyze in depth the causes of this defeat. The electorate has clearly expressed its preference for the continuation of Laporta’s project, leaving little room for opposition. “I congratulate Joan Laporta, the president-elect, on his indisputable victory. I also want to thank the more than 40,000 members who mobilized and allowed us to choose who will chair the organization, and of course, everyone who supported us. We did not obtain the expected results, but I would like to point out that we would have liked a greater participation. Let’s hope this is the last time we have elections like this. We need to modernize the club. We are disappointed that not all of our commitments have been met. We accept the outcome and move on. This significant gap is surprising, but decisions are made by members through their votes. We now need to analyze the situation and draw conclusions. It is a good thing that this debate has taken place and it will continue in the years to come”declared the candidate. Victor Font recognizes the importance of members’ choices and the direct impact of sporting results and the popularity of the outgoing president on the vote. This election therefore marks a turning point, but it also opens a phase of reflection on the strategies to adopt to remain influential within the club.
Despite the disappointment, VĂctor Font remains determined to defend his vision of a different FC Barcelona and to continue his mission for the club. He insists that his efforts are not personal, but focused on the cause of Barça and the optimization of its functioning. “What we have defended in recent years is a different Barça, as we explained during this campaign. It is a noble cause that we will continue to defend and which is well worth it. I will continue to work to make Barça the Barça I dream of. I believe in this cause, whatever my role, because it’s not about names. I work for the cause, not for personal gain, and I will continue to fight for this club to become what I want it to be. The results must be analyzed. At the time, I would say that the ball and the sporting result count a lot, especially for the first team, and that is what happened. The return to the Camp Nou was also more important than many other things that are not working and that we have explained in recent days. This is how it is, and we must accept defeat”concluded Font. Even outside the presidency, he intends to continue to contribute to debates, to analyze the situation and to propose alternatives to improve the club. This posture shows that he does not give up influencing the institutional and sporting future of the team, while accepting the democratic results expressed by the members.
