The 2024-2025 edition of the Champions League has already experienced some important modifications. Exit the eight groups of four teams that clashed in round-trip matches. This year, the 32 teams were divided into a single league.
Each training played eight games, facing eight different opponents. A hat system now allows you to keep a certain equity between the clubs committed. This new operating mode has been considered a success, with a number of surprises.
Clubs like Real Madrid, Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain were expected to finish in the first eight and qualify directly in the round of 16. However, these large displacements had to go through the dam box to try to validate their ticket for this stage of the competition.
Champions League, what changes to come?
For the next editions, UEFA is considering introducing new products as indicated by the German media Bild. The first would be the abolition of extension during the eliminatory phases. The goal would be to go directly to penalties in the event of equality at the end of regulation time. And this, in order to lighten the playing time of footballers.
In the logic of rewarding clubs finishing in the first eight places, UEFA could give them the advantage of playing the return of the playoffs at home. The European Instance also thinks of avoiding club clashes from the same country before the quarter -finals. This season, PSG and Brest had been opposed during the accession dams to the knockout stages. The changes, if adopted, should not be effective before the 2026-2027 edition.
