The coronation of Ademola Lookman as best African player of the year 2024 caused a sensation. Preferred to the Moroccan Achraf Hakimi, this trophy, presented in Marrakech, symbolizes recognition of an extraordinary year for the Nigerian winger. This coronation, however, did not fail to arouse frustrations in the camp of the PSG defender.

Lookman steals the show from Hakimi

Nasser Al-Khelaïfi, president of Paris Saint-Germain, even made the trip to Marrakech to support his player during this prestigious ceremony. But his trip ultimately proved in vain: Hakimi was beaten by Lookman, in his own country, adding a special flavor to this event.

With Atalanta Bergamo, Lookman had a memorable season. Hero of the Europa League final thanks to a hat-trick against Leverkusen, he allowed his team to win a historic European title. In Serie A, he shone with 18 decisive contributions and was voted best player of his club.

Nigerian domination

This distinction reinforces Ademola Lookman among the best players on the continent. Already involved in 16 goals in all competitions during the current campaign, he continues to wear Atalanta and the Nigerian selection. His performance during the last CAN also made an impression, consolidating his influence on African football.

Lookman thus becomes the seventh Nigerian to win this prestigious individual trophy, succeeding his compatriot Victor Osimhen, winner in 2023. Nigeria asserts itself as the most successful nation in the history of this award.

For Hakimi and PSG, this result leaves a bitter taste, especially after the symbolic investment of Al-Khelaïfi to support his player. But Lookman’s merit is indisputable, crowning a year where he was able to eclipse his rivals, even on their home soil.
