The inglorious spiral of the French women’s football team continues. On an ascending phase until the Corinne Deacon era, the French selection began to stagnate and show some worrying signs. Internal bickering and a putsch fomented by a few executives (including Wendie Renard, Marie-Antoine Katoto and Kadidiatou Diani) against their coach at the time. Then the arrival of Hervé Renard who was unable to make his group progress and preferred to leave at the end of his contract. And while Laurent Bonadei puts his method in place, the Blues have left the Top 10 of the Fifa rankings.
Unheard of in the history of the selection which has not won a match against big teams for a while. After an exit in the quarter-finals of the 2023 World Cup, the Tricolores did not do better a year later, losing to Brazil at this same stage of the competition, during the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. huge disappointment, but a confirmation of the French women’s difficulties in reaching a milestone.
A return to the Top 10 not so far away
And even if they reached their first final of an official competition during the 2023-2024 Nations League, Eugénie Le Sommer’s partners were outclassed by Spain (2-0). A few months later, the declassification is official. For the first time since the establishment of the Fifa ranking in 2003 for women, the French team is no longer among the ten best selections. This new alert should therefore be taken very seriously.
The worst ranking for Les Bleues was tenth place and dates back to 2009. An eternity and another era. Despite this not very encouraging observation, it should still be noted that the French remain on a positive record since they have won ten of their last seventeen matches (with seven defeats). A statistic to be tempered depending on the opponents encountered. With 1917.58 points on the clock, the Blues can however hope to quickly return to this famous Top 10 since the Netherlands, currently tenth, only have a tiny lead (1929.09 points).
