After drawing the Madrid derby on Sunday, Real Madrid went two matches without a win by losing 1-0 to Lille in their second Champions League group stage match this season. It is also the first time that the Merengues have lost in any competition in 36 matches. This is also the first setback for the Merengue team since May 2023. This shows the historic feat of the Dogues.
Carlo Ancelotti made three changes for this trip to northern France, and one of them was forced. Thibaut Courtois’ adductor injury meant Andriy Lunin made his first appearance of the season. At the start of the match, he reacted well to prevent Jonathan David from opening the scoring.
However, Lunin couldn’t stop David from scoring later in the first period. Eduardo Camavinga was punished for touching the ball with his hand in the penalty area, which allowed the Canadian striker to score in the last action of the first half via penalty.
A historic feat
In the second half, Kylian Mbappé was introduced by Ancelotti, as Real Madrid looked to turn things around. The Madrilenians, however, failed to create many clear chances, and Lille held on to secure a historic victory.
This result puts Real Madrid in a less than ideal position in the group stage standings, although they are still more than capable of finishing in the top 8, which would ensure automatic qualification for the round of 16.
