Eric Roy couldn’t believe his eyes. Overtaken in great ways at Abbé-Deschamps against AJ Auxerre a few days ago, his team was astonishing in its tenacity and realism to achieve an impressive victory on Austrian soil, against Salzburg, team of the Redbull firm experienced in European games.
Make no mistake: Brest
approached this match well with the Tom Thumb costume. Salzburg is a powerful club, with a young and talented squad. And despite its success against the other Austrian team on its schedule, Sturm Graz, last week, Brest had no reference at this altitude.
Incredible Brestois
What was expected was that the Brestois would not have possession of the ball. They actually held the ball 47% of the time. What was also important was that the Austrians multiplied the offensive waves. What was less so, however, was seeing Brest inflict a real lesson in efficiency on both surfaces.
After a scare over a disallowed goal at the start of the match, Brest found the opening a little against the flow of play, with a marvelous counter-attack initiated by Ajorque and concluded by Sima after a superb opening from the former Strasbourg player (0- 1, 24e). Untenable in the attack from deep, Sima even went for his double in the second half (0-3, 70th). In the meantime, Camara had made the break for the Brestois (0-2, 66th), before Pereira Lage added to the bill to give this victory the appearance of a correction (0-4, 75th). Great art. Back in line in Ligue 1, Brest is indeed the best student in Europe for the moment. The baptism is successful.
