Bayern Munich has regained its European benchmark stature this season under the leadership of Vincent Kompany. German champion with a rejuvenated and more aggressive team in the game, the Bavarian club especially made an impression with its continental career. The Champions League semi-final against PSG confirmed Bayern’s return among the teams capable of competing with the greatest powers on the continent. During long sequences, the Munich players imposed their rhythm, their pressing and their intensity against a Parisian team nevertheless considered one of the most complete in Europe. This European campaign also made it possible to validate several strong choices by Kompany, in particular his vertical and offensive football which gave a clear identity to a squad sometimes considered to be losing its bearings in recent seasons. Despite the elimination, the dominant feeling in Germany remains that of a huge step forward. Bayern has regained credibility, personality and above all a collective ambition capable of allowing it to aim higher from next season.

This progression is not only based on results but also on the structural evolution of the team. Harry Kane again carried the Bavarian attack with impressive regularity while Joshua Kimmich and Aleksandar Pavlovic gave more control in the middle. Without forgetting the dazzling integration of Luis Diaz, recruited last summer. Bayern have also found real mental consistency in major events, which was no longer always the case during previous European campaigns. The leaders now consider that the group is no longer very far from the level necessary to win back the Champions League. The confrontations against PSG, however, highlighted several limits in the decisive moments. Certain defensive imbalances, sometimes poorly controlled transitions and a lack of depth in certain positions were costly in important sequences. The Bavarians sometimes dominated the game without managing to transform this superiority into qualification. This observation now feeds the club’s thinking for the summer transfer window.

Three major missions in the transfer window

According to Sky Sport GermanyBayern Munich is launching its first three major summer projects with a priority identified on the defensive sides. The performances of Josip Stanisic and Konrad Laimer were considered solid throughout the season, but the European posters demonstrated the importance of having professional full-backs capable of swinging matches offensively as well as defensively. Comparisons with Achraf Hakimi and Nuno Mendes have reinforced this idea within the club. Even Uli Hoeness has publicly acknowledged his admiration for the Moroccan defender. At the same time, the physical situation of Alphonso Davies continues to worry after a long absence and several muscular relapses. Munich therefore wants to recruit a profile capable of bringing more percussion and security in major European matches. The second project concerns the defensive midfielder after the departure of Leon Goretzka. The club is looking for a solution capable of strengthening the rotation behind Kimmich and Pavlovic. The young Kennet Eichhorn is one of the profiles closely followed despite competition from several major European clubs.

The third priority file concerns the attack and the need to offer more solutions around Kane and Luis Diaz. Bavarian leaders want to strengthen offensive versatility in order to maintain a constant threat throughout the season. Anthony Gordon appears to be one of the major targets of the transfer window. His profile is particularly attractive because he can play in several offensive positions while providing speed and intensity in pressing. However, discussions with Newcastle promise to be complex due to the English club’s high financial demands. In parallel with recruitment, Kompany also wishes to correct certain tactical flaws observed against PSG. The Bavarians have conceded several goals in similar actions and the staff believes that a better defensive balance will be essential to reach the last European milestone. Bayern do not want to shake up their offensive identity but rather add more control in key moments. This reflection perfectly illustrates the current state of mind of the Bavarian club. The team now believes that the details will make the difference in the quest for a future treble.
