After Manchester City’s draw on Tuesday evening, Arsenal are assured of the Premier League title heading into the final matchday this weekend. Robert Pirès does not hide his joy.

Finally ! It’s liberation for Arsenal, who won their 14th English championship title on Tuesday evening, the first in 22 years. After taking a big step towards the coronation by winning Monday evening against Burnley (1-0), the Gunners witnessed Manchester City’s draw at Bournemouth (1-1), which sealed the fate of the championship.

Mikel Arteta’s players celebrated this title in front of their television, with immense joy, shared by all the Canonniers fans who went to the area around the Emirates Stadium. For Robert Pirès too, it was a great moment.

“I am very happy and very moved, confided the 1998 world champion on Canal+. It’s a club that already deserved to be champion long before. That’s three times they’ve finished second, three times they’ve been beaten. For three years they have been called losers or that they are a team that is not playing well this year. But hey, they are champions, and that makes me really happy. »

Robert Pirès wore the colors of Arsenal between 2000 and 2006, for what was the best period of his career. He was champion twice, in 2002 and in 2004, the season of the last title, that of the Invincibles. He is delighted to see his former club being rewarded for its efforts in recent seasons, and once again denounces the negative climate around the club.

“I know Mikel Arteta well. I know it hasn’t been easy for him this season because we’ve sent missiles at him. Former Manchester players had fun. We can always debate the game that Arsenal developed. But, you know, the last time Arsenal were champions was in 2004, it was a bit too long and that’s why I’m very happy for the club. »
