Since the takeover of Chelsea FC by BlueCo in 2022, the Blues have continued to make a series of coaching changes. After the visits of Thomas Tuchel, Graham Potter, Frank Lampard, Mauricio Pochettino, Enzo Maresca, Liam Rosenior and Callum McFarlane, the London management has this time decided to bet on Xabi Alonso. Free since his departure from Real Madrid last January, the Spaniard has officially been named the new coach of the Blues. The former Liverpool player, who will take up his position on July 1, has signed up for the next four years.

A few months ago, however, Xabi Alonso arrived in the Spanish capital with the label of one of the most promising coaches in Europe after his notable stint at Leverkusen. His arrival at the Merengues should make it possible to revive a team that was losing momentum while imposing a clear playing identity. But despite encouraging beginnings, the adventure quickly turned into a nightmare. Between disappointing performances, internal tensions and the insufficient involvement of certain executives, the Spanish technician has never succeeded in stabilizing the Madrid locker room. Faced with this situation, Florentino Pérez finally made the decision to end his mandate only seven months after his arrival. A short experience for the former midfielder, who now finds a new major challenge in an equally unstable context at Chelsea.

A third championship as coach for Alonso

“Chelsea Football Club is delighted to announce the appointment of Xabi Alonso as Men’s Team Manager. The Spaniard will take up the role on July 1, 2026, having signed a four-year contract at Stamford Bridge. Welcome to Chelsea, Xabi! »published the residents of Stamford Bridge.

On the London side, this appointment is part of the desire to rebuild a coherent project after several seasons marked by irregularity and contested sporting choices. With his modern profile and his experience acquired between Leverkusen and Madrid, Xabi Alonso will now have to succeed where many have failed for three years: restore a real identity to the Blues and place Chelsea among the great powers of the Premier League and Europe.
