Michael Carrick’s adventure on the Manchester United bench will continue next season, and perhaps even the following ones. Appointed interim coach of the Red Devils in mid-January following the dismissal of Ruben Amorim, the 44-year-old coach quickly gave satisfaction. He started his mandate with two victories against the two best teams in the championship: Manchester City (2-0) and Arsenal (2-3).

Under his leadership, Manchester United rose from 6th to 3rd place and secured a place in the Champions League for next season. It is also almost certain that the Red Devils will finish the season on the podium, which has not happened since 2022/2023. Beyond his results, Carrick also knew how to revive several players like Kobbie Mainoo, who was transformed under his orders. All these elements pushed the Mancunian management to continue the adventure with their former player.

2-year contract, with one year optional

As revealed The Athletic this Friday evening, the technician reached an agreement in principle with his club in order to continue as head coach. All signals are green for a two-year contract extension, with an optional one-year extension. During a meeting this week at Carrington, co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe agreed on the idea, along with general manager Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox.

Other profiles had previously been considered, specifies The Athletic. The path leading to Andoni Iraola, free at the end of the season after having enjoyed his time at Bournemouth, had been studied, as had the one leading to Unai Emery, author of tremendous work on the Aston Villa bench. Manchester United finally opted for the stability card with Carrick, already serving as an interim on two occasions (in 2021 and this season). Since his return, the former club player has a record of 10 wins, 3 draws and 2 defeats.
