Kylian Mbappé’s recent speech continues to provoke numerous reactions. In an interview with the American magazine Vanity Fair and published on Tuesday, the French striker notably mentioned his political commitment, reaffirming his concern about a possible arrival of the National Rally in power.
“It touches me, because I know what it means, and I know what can happen to my country if these people take power. We are citizens. We have the right to give our opinion, like everyone else”declared the 27-year-old player in the columns of the American media.
These comments quickly provoked strong reactions, particularly from the National Rally. Jordan Bardella and Marine Le Pen responded publicly to the exit of the captain of the Blues, while several party figures took turns on television sets on Wednesday.
“It creates problems and tensions”
But it was above all the reaction of Christophe Dugarry which caught the attention. On the show Rothen s’ignée on RMC Sport, the 1998 world champion was worried about the possible consequences of this controversy on the France team, less than a month before the start of the 2026 World Cup.
“Of course we shouldn’t forbid him (from speaking), I speak of the moment. It changes everything. At a press conference, the journalists will ask questions one after the other”explained Dugarry. “It creates problems and tensions. It creates a kind of repression with the supporters, with players who are constantly on social networks. (…) When you are lucky enough to have such a talented and strong team, which lives well and with players who get along very well, why go and create a kind of controversy which has no value to this day? »
