It is at the expense of Didier Deschamps and Laurent Blanc in particular that Luis Enrique will become the most successful coach in the Champions League at the head of a French club.

In less than three years, Luis Enrique has written the history of PSG and the Champions League, especially if his team achieves the double by beating Arsenal in the C1 final, on May 30 in Budapest. The Asturian coach, who arrived in the French capital in 2023, is on track to overtake two legends of French football, Didier Deschamps and Laurent Blanc, 98 world champions who became coaches.

Luis Enrique in fact managed his 45th LDC match during the semi-final return against Bayern on Wednesday evening, which allowed Ousmane Dembélé and his teammates to reach the final (1-1, a week after a 5-4 victory).

Deschamps also has 45 Champions League matches at the head of a French team, with AS Monaco during one season then OM during three campaigns (for a quarter-final in 2013). Luis Enrique will equal Laurent Blanc in the number of C1 matches during the final against Arsenal, “The President” having played in the most beautiful continental competition with the Girondins de Bordeaux then PSG (for three eliminations in the quarters).

Claude Puel is the coach who has played the most Champions League matches with a French club, namely 48, with AS Monaco, 2000 French champions, then during his spells at Losc and OL. Luis Enrique will be stationed at PSG next season and will only need three matches to be the only record holder. The former Barça coach and Spain coach is also linked until 2030 with the club owned by Qatar.
