It’s almost the end. And it was grandiose. Saturday evening, Tigres supporters paid immense tribute to André-Pierre Gignac who was able to play his last match in the Mexican championship.
The 40-year-old French striker is coming to the end of his contract, and could end his career. Before this last regular season match against Mazatlan, the Monterrey club was not sure of qualifying for the playoffs. So the Volcano, the Tigres stadium, had prepared a monumental tifo for the former OM player, who had become the hero of an entire people.
Gignac became king
Arriving in 2015, Gignac quickly won over his new supporters, and will leave as a legend. His imprint? 440 matches, 222 goals, numerous trophies (five Mexican championship titles, a Concacaf Champions League, etc.), and above all an unofficial title of king of Nuevo Leon, the state of which Monterrey is the capital, where the Tigres play a heated derby against the Rayados.
There is still a semi-final of the Concacaf Champions League for Gignac with the Tigres, against the Americans from Nashville, and therefore a quarter-final of the championship, for the closing tournament. But whatever happens, the ending lives up to the magnificent adventure experienced by “APG” in Mexico.
