Appointed interim coach of Manchester United after the Ruben Amorim fiasco, Michael Carrick is far from ridiculous. The Red Devils are third in the Premier League standings and can therefore dream of returning to the Champions League after two difficult seasons punctuated by a 15th and an 8th place. However, many people, particularly former MU players, are pushing the Mancunian management to turn to another coach for next season. Author of virulent criticism of Carrick on his social networks, Paul Scholes had to explain himself in the podcast The Good, The Bad & The Football.
“I didn’t mean to offend Michael in any way. Michael is one of the nicest people you will ever meet in the world of football and he would be the last person I would want to offend. I still messaged Michael and said, “Look, I never meant to upset you,” but I don’t think I needed to say that. He told me he wasn’t upset. I think people just interpreted that differently than what I meant. The only thing I would say is that I don’t think they have played very well in the last four games, but they are still managing to get results. We had the best manager in the world (Sir Alex Ferguson) and he always said that sometimes you need a bit of luck with the sending offs and the different things that happen during matches, but that’s all I wanted to say. » The former midfielder has kept a low profile, but the fact remains that MU lovers are not really pushing to see Carrick’s interim period continue.
They are all crazy about Luis Enrique
Clearly, observers want a more high-sounding name at the head of the Red Devils. This is also what is written in black and white on Manchester Evening News. “At 44, he (Carrick) has exceeded all expectations since his return in January and should be signed on a permanent basis if he can qualify the club for the Champions League, provided no elite manager is available. Who is part of the elite? Luis Enrique and Julian Nagelsmann are two coaches who should be considered ahead of Carrick, regardless of his results this season. They have proven themselves at the highest level and achieved more than Carrick during their careers. Manchester United are expected to court Luis Enrique and Nagelsmann to gauge their interest in the job. Luis Enrique won the Champions League twice, with Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain, and won domestic trophies for both clubs. Enrique’s contract in Paris expires in the summer of 2027, meaning there could be an opportunity for Manchester United, especially with the Spaniard reportedly ready to take on a new challenge. »
An option validated by another former MU legend, the Frenchman Patrice Evra. “I’m not talking to the Manchester United board or Sir Jim Ratcliffe, but in my humble opinion, with no disrespect to PSG or Nasser Al-Khelaifi, Luis Enrique would be the ideal manager for Manchester United. I love this man, I love his philosophy, what he went through in his personal life and how he overcame those challenges says a lot about his personality. The work he did at PSG winning the Champions League without Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappé or Neymar is fantastic. The players will have to work very hard to play for Manchester United, they will have to run a lot and I think Enrique will bring that to them. But I don’t think we should rule out Michael Carrick, he’s done a great job and we need to give him a chance. People want an exceptional manager for Manchester United, but right now we need someone who understands the club and the players. Enrique is a genius tactician and is great with players, but I think Carrick deserves his chance. » Often cited near Old Trafford, Luis Enrique is definitely popular in England. An interest which, if not seducing him, will be an excellent lever for the negotiation of his new contract in Paris.
