Stuck in a delicate season and still under the threat of the red zone, Paris FC approached the winter transfer window with maximum pressure. Promoted ambitious, but still fragile, the Ile-de-France club paid dearly for its lack of consistency, its recurring difficulties in controlling the tempo in the middle and an offensive animation that was too irregular to hope to navigate calmly in Ligue 1. At the close of the winter market, Monday evening, the observation remained clear internally. Despite the investments made last summer, the Ile-de-France club required immediate adjustments to avoid a second part of the season under extreme tension. Long confined to an observational posture, management has finally accelerated in recent weeks, aware that maintaining the position would not only be based on playing principles, but also on the ability to quickly correct structural imbalances. In this context of sporting and accounting emergency, each decision taken this winter had to respond to a logic of immediate return.
At first glance, the Paris FC winter transfer window has taken on an Italian accent that is as marked as it is unexpected. Lucas Koleosho, Diego Coppola and finally Ciro Immobile… The sequence was surprising, as the transalpine turn appeared suddenly. With the winger trained in Italy, the Parisian club injected percussion and creativity on the wings. With Coppola, Jean-Bouin’s residents have strengthened a defensive sector in search of solidity. And finally, with Immobile, European champion in 2021, Paris FC struck a major blow by offering themselves an experienced center forward to secure their continuation after the insufficient performance of Willem Geubbels. An observation which, if surprising at first glance, is nevertheless quickly explained in light of what goes on behind the scenes. Far from a simple alignment of opportunities, this transfer window with a strong Italian tone is part of a clear strategy, where Paris FC is gradually structuring a transalpine axis set to become central in its sporting project.
Strengthened ties with Italy
This Italian tropism is in no way a coincidence. Already firmly established at Paris FC, the Red Bull group has continued, according to our information, to methodically expand its network in Italy for more than a year. Sports directors, agents, clubs, training centers, journalists… The Austrian brand has increased its connections in order to prepare a lasting establishment in Serie A. Present in several major championships (Austria, Germany, United States, Brazil, Japan), Red Bull now considers Italy as a strategic market with high potential, still underexploited in certain key aspects of its philosophy: development of young talents, modernization of infrastructure and control of the sports value chain. The arrival of Jürgen Klopp in the group’s overall organization chart has only accelerated this dynamic. Without intervening in the daily life of the clubs, the German promotes a long-term vision, particularly in markets deemed priority, of which Italy is clearly a part. In this context, it is especially important to remember that Red Bull’s desire to invest sustainably in Italy does not date from this transfer window. By October 2024, several avenues had emerged, including those leading to Torino and Genoa, without any materializing at this stage, although relations with the Granata remain very good and negotiations are not officially closed despite the harshness of President Urbano Cairo. The objective nevertheless remains unchanged, Red Bull absolutely wants to acquire an Italian club and integrate it into the galaxy of timeshares.
For several months, according to our information, the Austrian group has been increasing its progress, making contacts and carrying out feasibility studies, whether regarding sporting, structural or institutional aspects. More than a specific file, it is a global strategy that is at work, with the desire to succeed in its transalpine establishment by taking the time to secure the right project. A backdrop which partly illuminates the Italian shift observed this winter on the side of Paris FC. The movements are closely followed by the Italian Federation. According to our information, Gennaro Gattuso is now encouraging certain young talents to emigrate to train abroad, gain maturity, then ultimately strengthen the Nazionale, facing a Serie A which is still struggling to offer playing time to its best emerging talents, despite the excellent results of the young selections. In this sense, the Italian coach is increasing his trips to Italy, England, Spain, Saudi Arabia and is expected soon in France to observe the Italian players of Paris FC with a view to the next international events, including the play-offs for the next World Cup in March.
Internally, this winter transfer window will also remain as the first entirely managed by Marco Neppe as sporting director. A leader from the Red Bull galaxy, who logically activated his networks well before the market opened. According to our information, several Italian avenues have been seriously explored in agreement with Stéphane Gilli, Antoine Arnault and Jean-Marc Gallot. As we revealed to you earlier in the month, Kristjan Asllani, a very popular profile, but considered difficult to access, Luca Marianucci and Matteo Prati (finally recruited by Torino, another club closely linked to Red Bull) were surveyed. Fiorentina midfielder Jacopo Fazzini was also on the Parisian shelves. So many files which illustrate a clear strategy, namely making Italy a structuring axis of the Parisian project. If everything could not be achieved this winter, the foundations have been laid. With Koleosho, Coppola, Immobile and these strengthened connections behind the scenes, Paris FC is no longer content with fighting for its survival. It is now part of an assumed international dynamic. And in Paris, la dolce vita may just be beginning.
