PSG-OM: why Thomas Léonard awarded a penalty to Mason Greenwood

Thursday evening, at the Jaber Al-Ahmad International Stadium, Paris Saint-Germain offered themselves a new title by defeating OM in the Champions Trophy organized in Kuwait (2-2; 4-1 tab). A Classic with twists and turns where Roberto De Zerbi’s men almost won before the saving equalizer from Gonçalo Ramos and a penalty shootout still perfectly managed by the Parisians. Decisive by interposing against Traoré and O’Riley, Lucas Chevalier certainly signed his benchmark match under the Parisian tunic, despite a guilty mistake in his own area while his team led the score.

Hesitant in his exit, the former LOSC goalkeeper destabilized Mason Greenwood and caused a penalty, which had the merit of relaunching OM. A contentious action which quickly sparked debate. So, was there really a fault from the Parisian goalkeeper on the English striker? At real speed, it’s hard to tell. However, Thomas Léonard’s initial decision was indeed validated by the VAR. If the latter admits to having had technical difficulties with the quality of the images proposed, a contact at the shoulder level finally convinced the evening officials to confirm the decision taken on the field. As a result, Mason Greenwood scored his first goal in a Champions Trophy. Insufficient, however, to allow OM to end a 14-year drought without the slightest title.
