Semenyo is expected to be one of the most sought-after players in the Premier League this winter and is attracting keen interest from Liverpool. However, the Citizens could well get ahead of the Reds and try to revive their title hopes.
Manchester City could afford Semenyo in January.
According to the Times, Manchester City are “exploring” the possibility of recruiting Semenyo and could activate his £65 million ($86 million) release clause, which becomes effective on January 1 for the start of the transfer window.
The 25-year-old has already scored six goals and three assists in the league this season, establishing himself as one of the most dangerous strikers in the league following his 13 goals last season. His performances have attracted the attention of many major English clubs, including struggling Liverpool, following revelations about the clause earlier this autumn.
While Manchester City are “not yet fully committed” to a deal, according to the report, the club would recognize the added value the Ghanaian could bring in sharing goals with Haaland, scorer of 14 of City’s 27 league goals. Phil Foden became the second City player to surpass the league goal mark with his breakthrough performance against Leeds United on Saturday.
Semenyo could help Haaland
Semenyo could also compensate for the departure of Egyptian striker Omar Marmoush for the Africa Cup of Nations. With Ghana not qualifying for the CAN for the first time in 21 years, Semenyo will not participate in the competition.
Elsewhere in City’s attack, wingers Savinho and Oscar Bobb have struggled to impact matches since the start of the season, while Jeremy Doku, although having reached a milestone, has only scored one goal in the league. The Belgian and Semenyo could form a formidable winger duo alongside Haaland if the latter were to join the Etihad.
Bournemouth’s sparkling form at the start of the season has faded in recent weeks, with Andoni Iraola’s side slipping away from the top four and towards mid-table. This context reinforces the likelihood of a departure of their star player this winter, with the club’s interest expected to intensify as the New Year approaches.
