OM fights back. The day after Marseille’s victory against Newcastle (2-1) on Tuesday in the Champions League, a controversy quickly went beyond the sporting framework. English supporters denounced police violence leaving the VĂ©lodrome. Accusations to which Olympique de Marseille responded firmly by press release this Thursday.

The Marseille club recalls that the reception and evacuation system for visiting supporters had been prepared “well in advance of the meeting”in close collaboration with the Police Headquarters, UEFA and Newcastle. According to OM, this device, “compliant with UEFA standards”was applied “in good conditions” throughout the evening.

OM slams the door on all responsibility

Marseille also specifies that no particular incident was reported to it by the representatives of the English club, neither during the meeting nor in the hours which followed. OM also reaffirms its “constant commitment” to guarantee secure travel for its own supporters, as well as its commitment to offering “a suitable and secure welcome” to opposing fans.

Finally, the club is categorical about its responsibility in the incidents reported. “The Club cannot accept that its responsibility is wrongly called into question”insists the press release, while Newcastle evokes a use “excessive and disproportionate force” by the police, including the use of tear gas and batons.
