It’s over for OM

Olympique de Marseille won a victory that counts. With only three points on the clock after four days in the League phase, the Ciel et Blanc had no other choice but to win against Newcastle on Tuesday to maintain their chances of qualifying for the play-offs.

And despite the Magpies opening the score after only six minutes, OM achieved their goals on the Vélodrome pitch. After wasting several opportunities before the break, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang turned everything around after returning from the locker room by scoring two goals in less than five minutes. Enough to allow Roberto De Zerbi’s men to win 2-1 and put themselves back in the race for qualification.

A first since 2012

Thanks to this victory, OM also ended two incredible series. The Olympian club had not won in the European Cup against an English team for almost 15 years and a 1-0 success against Chelsea thanks to a goal from Brandao. Since then, the Marseillais had gone 12 matches without the slightest victory against English clubs.

Above all, this success also means that the Phocaeans put an end to an incredible series of seventeen consecutive defeats against a team from the four major European championships. To find traces of a match concluded with a result other than a defeat, we must go back to the spring of 2012 and a victory won over Inter Milan in the round of 16 of the Champions League (1-0).
