It was a great European evening that the supporters of Olympique de Marseille experienced this Tuesday. While their team hosted Newcastle in their lair at the VĂ©lodrome, a stunning scenario was offered to them. Led by the Magpies, the PhocĂ©ens managed to score two goals at the start of the second half. A double from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang which completely revives OM’s chances of qualifying for the rest of the competition (2-1).
One thing is certain, the Marseille victory is anything but usurped. Roberto De Zerbi can only regret this early opening score from Harvey Barnes in favor of the visitors (0-1, 6th). On fire recently, notably with a double scored on November 22 during the Toons’ victory against Manchester City (2-1, 12th day of the Premier League), Barnes has cooled the VĂ©lodrome. But only temporarily, because the Marseillais showed that they were there to win.
And that’s where Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang started to come into his own. Two opportunities in quick succession for the Gabonese (18th and 19th), but without success. Newcastle immediately responded with Sandro Tonali (23rd) then Joseph Willock (31st). Six minutes later, another unsuccessful opportunity for “Aubam” (37th). At the break, after a decisive save from Geronimo Rulli in front of Anthony Gordon (43rd), Marseille were still behind.
Aubameyang, a double that changes everything
And then suddenly… The match had not resumed for a minute when Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang started the fire. Launched by the young Darryl Bakola, for whom it was his first start in the first team, the striker equalized in front of a jubilant audience (1-1, 46th). But Aubameyang hadn’t said everything and less than five minutes later, he scored a second goal (2-1, 50th). Furious madness in the bays of an incandescent VĂ©lodrome.
The rest will not see any change in the score despite a few new opportunities on both sides. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang will be replaced to the cheers of his audience and Marseille will validate its second success in C1 this season after the spanking inflicted on Ajax in the same Vélodrome (4-0). In the provisional ranking, OM climbs to nineteenth place and can still hope to make it through the first round. To do this, we will have to not miss out on December 9 in Belgium, against Union Saint-Gilloise who beat Galatasaray this Tuesday (0-1).
