While an agreement for an extension until 2030 was imminent, discussions have now stalled between the two parties, against a backdrop of growing tensions between the winger and his coach, Xabi Alonso. The 25-year-old’s current contract runs until 2027.
Growing tensions in the Real Madrid locker room
Tensions between Vinicius and new Madrid coach Xabi Alonso have been building since July, when the Spaniard left him on the bench during the Club World Cup semi-final. Since then, their understanding has deteriorated. The winger has only started four times in Real Madrid’s twelve league games this season, being frequently substituted mid-match, even when he was fit, or coming on during the match.
The breaking point came in the 2-1 win over Barcelona in the Clasico last month. Vinicius, replaced in the 72nd minute, stormed off the field shouting “Always me!” before disappearing into the tunnel. The cameras then filmed him, furious, on the bench. Alonso’s tactical choices are being questioned internally, with some players believing his rigidity stifles creative players.
Contract negotiations between the club and the player have stalled.
Negotiations regarding the Brazilian international’s contract extension have taken an unexpected turn. The 25-year-old striker, whose current contract runs until 2027, was close to signing a long-term extension until 2030 earlier this year. Negotiations had reached an advanced stage after the Club World Cup, with both sides agreeing on a salary of around €18 million per year, plus bonuses, representing a significant increase from his current salary of €15 million.
But according to El Partidazo de COPE, negotiations between the two parties have stalled and no progress has been made. The newspaper adds that no date has been set for future talks, making Vinicius’ future at the Santiago BernabĂ©u uncertain.
