The resumption of Ligue 1 is idyllic for OM. The Marseille club was eagerly awaited by OGC Nice and especially the public at the Allianz Arena, the Ultras of the South turn celebrating their 40th anniversary. Roberto De Zerbi’s players won with an impressive score of 5-1 in the Aiglons’ den to steal first place in the standings from PSG with two more points. The French and European champions host Le Havre on Saturday (9:05 p.m.).

Faced with a Franck Haise team that was a little too playful, the Phocaeans were quick to shake the nets. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang opened the scoring from close range with a header from Benjamin Pavard from a corner (11th), then Mason Greenwood scored twice, with a shot deflected by Melvin Bard (33rd) then with a perfectly crossed shot, again from the right (he is left-handed), at the start of the locker room (53rd).

Timothy Weah brought the score to 4-0 immediately (58th), before a reduction in the gap signed by Mohamed-Ali Cho with a header (63rd) then a fifth Marseille goal by Igor Paixao (74th). The match did not have any added time since the south turn triggered a long fireworks display in the 86th minute.

Skoblar’s OM surpassed

This OM displays collective weaknesses this season and the absences in defense (Leonardo Balerdi and now Nayef Aguerd) do not help. This is evidenced by the three defeats in Ligue 1 (while PSG only has one). But Greenwood and his teammates are talking the talk with now 33 goals scored. They offer themselves the countdown of the great OM 1970-1971, the season of 44 goals by Josip Skoblar, holder of the record for goals scored in a single season. OM had not scored so many after 13 matches since the 1948-1949 season, 76 years ago!

OGC Nice, for its part, has a third defeat in a row and remains in 9th position, under threat from Toulouse, Paris FC and Le Havre…
