Following its last defeat against Norway (1-4) this Sunday, Italy sees its chances of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup reduced. The quadruple world champions will now have to go through the play-offs to hope to redeem their ticket.
However, there is no question for the captain of the Nazionale, Gianluigi Donnarumma, of giving up. The Manchester City goalkeeper remains firmly convinced that his selection will manage to qualify in the next round.
“We will go to the World Cup”
“We are angry and disappointed in ourselves. We have to raise our heads because in March, we are playing something big. I’m very bitter but we absolutely have to go to the World Cup. We have to find confidence between now and March. (…) I am convinced that together we will go to the World Cup”assured the former Parisian.
As a reminder, Italy remains for the moment on two consecutive absences from the World Cup. The last time that the Squadra Azzurra took part in the premier football competition dates back to 2014 in Brazil. The team led by Cesare Prandelli ended in the group stage, having finished third behind Costa Rica and Uruguay, but ahead of England.
