The 2026 World Cup is on the horizon. Organized from June 11 to July 19 in the United States, Canada and Mexico, it could mark the last appearance of the two legends of modern football: Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. But if the Portuguese is already showing his determination to participate, the Argentinian is much more reserved about his presence to defend the title won with the Albiceleste in 2022.
Still so lucid about his condition, at 38 years old, Lionel Messi prefers to procrastinate. In an interview given to Sportthe eight-time Ballon d’Or recalled that he will not take part in the competition if he is not fully physically fit. “Obviously, it’s a special World Cup. It’s always an honor to play with the team, but I don’t want to be a burden. I want to be in top physical shape to make sure I can help and contribute to the group”explains the Argentine captain.
The Inter Miami star, who will resume the MLS season in March, wants to wait before deciding. “We will have pre-season preparation, a few friendlies before the World Cup, and we will see from day to day if I feel fit enough. I am aware that it is a special competition, the most prestigious there is. So, I’m impatient, but I’m taking it step by step.”he adds.
CR7 wants its last World Cup
While Messi plays the caution card, Cristiano Ronaldo displays unfailing determination. At 40, the Portuguese captain reaffirmed his desire to play in a sixth and final World Cup, even if Portugal has not yet validated its qualification.
During a videoconference organized in Riyadh as part of a forum on Saudi tourism, “CR7” confirmed that the 2026 World Cup would be its final international meeting. “Yes, for sure. I will be 41 and I think that will be the time”he declared. Two legends, two approaches, but the same dream: to bow out on football’s biggest stage.
