Yesterday, Cristiano Ronaldo emptied his bag on Manchester United during a long interview given to Piers Morgan. “He (Amorim) is doing his best. What are you going to do? Miracles. Miracles are impossible. In Portugal, they say: “miracles only exist in Fatima…” And he will not perform miracles. They have good players, but some of them haven’t fully understood what Manchester United stands for. Personally, I am sad because of the club, which is one of the most important clubs in the world and a club that remains dear to my heart for obvious reasons. You have to surround yourself with intelligent people, brilliant people, to build the foundations of the future, like Manchester United did so many years ago. Nicky Butt, Gary Neville, Roy Keane, David Beckham, they became great players, but they were young. Manchester United, at the moment, has no structure. I hope that changes in the future, present or future, because the potential of the club is incredible. It is one of the most important clubs of the century (…) I repeat, Manchester United is always in my heart. I love this club. But we all have to be honest and look at ourselves and say, “Look, they’re not on the right track.” So they have to change, and it doesn’t just concern the coach and the players, in my opinion.
An opinion that Ruben Amorim does not share. While in front of the press this Thursday, he responded to his compatriot: “of course he knows that and everything he says has a huge impact. What we need to focus on is the future. We know that our club has made a lot of mistakes in the past and we are trying to remedy them. Let us not focus on the past, but on what we are doing now, and that is what we are doing. We are changing a lot of things in the structure, in the way we do things and in the behavior we expect from players. We’re getting there and we’re making progress, so let’s move on and forget about the past.” The message has gotten through.
