Marquinhos caught up by his old demons? The conclusion would seem somewhat hasty but it is clear that the Brazilian international (101 caps, 7 goals) will remain one of the main disappointments after the nightmarish evening experienced by PSG against Bayern Munich on Tuesday evening (1-2). Remaining on the bench against OGC Nice last weekend, the Parisian captain nevertheless made his return to the Ile-de-France defense. Aligned alongside Willian Pacho, the former Corinthians and AS Roma player ultimately experienced a terrible ordeal.

Hampered by the mobility of Serge Gnabry, Michael Olise & co, the 1m83 right-hander was, moreover, constantly caught in his duel with Harry Kane. Incapable of containing the Bavarian offensive and very unreassuring in his transmissions, the native of SĂŁo Paulo was even guilty of a terrible error shortly after the half-hour mark. While his teammates were already chasing the score, the number 5 saw the ball stolen by Luis Diaz, who was not asking for much to score a double.

A totally irrelevant captain

“A captain can’t do that. Really. His responsibility – almost total – for the 2nd goal reflects his immense difficulties in the evening. Immediately, we felt lost in the face of Bavarian pressure. With appalling technical waste but above all an inability to manage German mobility. Everything was going way too fast for the Brazilian. He had the merit of not disuniting but what suffering in the first period”finally analyzed our colleagues from The Teamgiving it a rating of 2. Credited with a 2.5 by the FM editorial staff, Auriverde tried, however, to justify this disaster class.

“It’s always hard to lose at home. Disappointment. We have to impose ourselves, play better. We found a team that was very well put together, especially physically. They were better than us in physical impact, high recoveries. We couldn’t get our game together. We have a lot of players who are not 100%. I am one of those players. There are things to remember from this match, the team still has the ambition to want to beat all our opponents. We have to do better”admitted the person concerned, therefore recognizing that he was not yet physically ready.

Without directly incriminating his protégé, Luis Enrique for his part regretted the individual errors of the capital club. “We gave some great gifts, and when you give gifts to this type of player, it’s normal to lose the first half. They could have scored even more goals. If you give gifts at this level, it’s goal and it’s over”railed the Spanish technician, in reference to the huge blunder by the Brazilian defender on the second Bavarian goal. As PSG prepares to challenge OL on Sunday evening at Groupama Stadium, Marquinhos will now have to prove that this exit was just an epiphenomenon.
