Jude Bellingham surpassed Lionel Messi and his Real Madrid teammate Kylian Mbappé by writing a new chapter in Champions League history against Liverpool on Tuesday evening.

At just 22 years and 128 days old, the former Birmingham City prodigy shattered club legend Iker Casillas’ record by becoming the youngest player in history to reach 50 appearances in Europe’s most prestigious club competition. A remarkable achievement for the man who has ruled the Real Madrid midfield like a veteran since his expensive transfer from Borussia Dortmund a few years ago.

From the streets of Birmingham to the throne of the Bernabéu

Since arriving at Madrid in the summer of 2023, Bellingham has not only met the immense expectations placed on him, but exceeded them. He marked his arrival by scoring goals in his first four Champions League games with the Whites, establishing himself as the heart and soul of a team that would go on to win the Champions League under Carlo Ancelotti. This run of goals at the start of the season made him the fourth Real Madrid player in the 21st century to score on his debut in La Liga and the Champions League, joining legends like Cristiano Ronaldo, Isco and Marco Asensio. But Bellingham’s streak of outstanding performances doesn’t stop there. Opta data shows he is the fourth youngest captain in Champions League history, having led Borussia Dortmund against Sevilla in 2022 aged just 19 years and 98 days. Only Ruben Neves, Arthur Vermeeren and Matthijs de Ligt have been captains at a younger age. Additionally, his 90th-minute winner against Union Berlin in September 2023 made him the youngest player to score a goal in the dying minutes for Real Madrid in the Champions League, and the youngest Englishman to achieve this feat for a club in the competition.

A star in the Bernabéu locker room

Bellingham’s strength lies in his versatility. Often praised for his dominance in midfield and his formidable efficiency, he is always in the right place at the right time. Already winner of the Champions League, a trophy lifted in his first season with Real Madrid in 2023-2024, the young prodigy is hungry for success. After recovering from a lingering shoulder injury that handicapped him for much of the 2024-2025 season, Bellingham has regained his formidable efficiency. He scored in three consecutive matches, including the winning goal in the 2-1 Clasico win over Barcelona.
