Real Madrid announced earlier this week their intention to sue UEFA for damages over the dissolution of the Super League, following a court ruling earlier in the week.

FC Barcelona is the only other club still competing in this competition. According to some sources, this legal action could reach 4.7 billion euros if Real Madrid wins its case, a sum that would shake up the landscape of European football.

FC Barcelona could theoretically join this action, being the only other club still competing in the Super League. Such an approach would allow him to resolve a significant part of his financial difficulties.

FC Barcelona’s position in the face of legal action against UEFA

Despite this, Sport claims that FC Barcelona have no intention of getting involved. This is just another piece of further evidence of the restoration of relations between FC Barcelona and UEFA after this incident. UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin has been seen this season alongside his FC Barcelona counterpart Joan Laporta at Montjuïc. A few months ago, UEFA agreed to reduce the fine imposed on FC Barcelona from 60 million euros to 15 million euros, provided the club achieves certain targets this season.

Further proof of the rift between Real Madrid and FC Barcelona

It is also the latest proof that relations between Real Madrid and FC Barcelona are no longer what they used to be. In 2021, the president of Real Madrid, Florentino Pérez, helped Laporta obtain a bank guarantee for his return to the presidency of FC Barcelona. The two men then worked together on numerous issues, notably the Super League.

The withdrawal of FC Barcelona from the competition, the ongoing Negreira affair and various statements from both institutions have, however, contributed to the deterioration of these relations in 2025. This represents a major shift in the balance of power in Spanish football, and it will be interesting to hear Pérez’s speech at the Real Madrid General Assembly, having declared last year that the two clubs should help each other.
