The information chilled the blood of all Italy. Yesterday morning, social networks were ignited when several transalpine journalists announced that Inter were simply canceling Cristian Chivu's press conference, on the eve of the Serie A match against Fiorentina. A few minutes later, we learned of the horror. While on his way to Inter's training center, Josep Martinez accidentally ran over and killed a man in a wheelchair.
The thesis of a fatal malaise still holds
According to the first versions of the transalpine media, the scene occurred around 9:30 a.m. and would have occurred following discomfort in the victim, an 81-year-old man, which would have caused an unexpected change of direction of the wheelchair. This morning, the Gazzetta dello Sport tells us more about this drama. The victim's name was Paolo Saibene and he regularly used the cycle path along road number 32 located 5 km from the Nerazzurro training center. According to the first testimonies, the theory of fatal illness would hold water since the 81-year-old man was seen wobbling in a strange way before being deported on the road.
Josep Martrinez unfortunately arrived at that time and was unable to avoid the tragedy, which occurred via Bergamo in Fenegrò, a small village in the province of Como. The second guard and the woman who was driving behind him immediately tried to help Mr. Saibene. In vain. Martinez was not injured, but was in a state of shock. Several of his teammates, who took the same route to training, saw him sitting on the side of the road, holding his head in his two hands.
Martinez faces between 2 and 7 years in prison
The Spaniard was driving a ByD brand vehicle (one of the club's sponsors) which he had just received just two weeks ago and which he was driving for the second time. The pink paper newspaper adds that the player was not speeding on this road limited to 70 km/h. In addition, alcohol and drug tests were all negative. Inter immediately sent support for its goalkeeper, who then testified at a police station, accompanied by a club lawyer. Investigators seized Martinez's phone to find out if he was using it at the time of the accident.
As for possible sanctions, the Gazzetta explains that the guard faces a sentence of 2 to 7 years in prison according to article 589 bis of the Penal Code. On the Inter side, the Chivu press conference was therefore logically canceled, but training took place, in conditions that we imagine would be difficult. As for Josep Martinez, he only returned home around 6 p.m., after having been accompanied all day by several members of the club: the team manager, the security manager and the team doctor. At home, a psychologist from the club was waiting for him, because the player would have difficulty talking about what happened. Martinez then closed his social networks and will not return to training for several days… if the investigation allows it.
