This season, Manchester United wants to get out of trouble. After a slew of average seasons, the Red Devils hit rock bottom last year. Beaten in the Europa League final, the Mancunian club suffered in the championship with a humiliating 15th place at the end of the year. Despite this cataclysmic vintage, the leaders of the most successful club in England continued to bet on Ruben Amorim. Arriving in November 2024 on the English bench, the Portuguese coach has been regularly vilified in recent months. Sheltered from criticism at first, the former Sporting CP tactician was quickly singled out this season during the first disappointing results.

However, the current dynamic seems to prove the Portuguese's defenders right. Despite a checkered start to the season which could have spelled the end of Amorim's adventure with United, things are returning to normal for the residents of Old Trafford. A sign of this return to business, several individualities are beginning to emerge. This is the case of Bryan Mbeumo. Recruited from Brentford after a 20-goal season in the Premier League, the Cameroonian striker cost Manchester 81 million euros. Less experienced from the big clubs like the two other offensive recruits, Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko, the former Troyes player is nevertheless the one who has had the best start to the season.

Manchester United are under the spell of Bryan Mbeumo

Quickly opening his account on August 30 against Burnley, the versatile 26-year-old winger experienced a period of drought which coincided with his team's period of weakness. Unable to be decisive from September 14 to September 27 during three championship matches, he saw his team lose twice during this period. A decisive passer against Sunderland just before the October break, he contributed to the victory against the Black Cats (2-0). Upon returning from the October break, the native of Avallon moved up a gear. Scorer in Liverpool, the Mancunian number 19 scored a double at home against Brighton this weekend. As luck would have it, United won both matches. Even when his team didn't win, the striker was always one of the only rays of sunshine this season and never failed.

XXL performances which allow Mbeumo to assert himself as the leader of the Red Devils attack and as one of the best players in England. In October, no Premier League player was more decisive than Mbeumo. Performances that attract praise, like those of the legend Wayne Rooney, rave about the Cameroonian in his podcast: “Mbeumo was consistent in his performances, I think that's the main thing. If you consistently find yourself in the right positions and create chances, you will eventually score. When you're a striker and you score goals, you enjoy scoring goals and that feeling lasts. He is very confident at the moment. I hope that continues because he has certainly been United's best signing this season.»

For his part, Mbeumo works and his performances speak for him. Asked after the match against the Seagulls, the Cameroonian explained that he was not setting limits for his first season at United: “It hasn’t been easy because we all came in this year and we tried to bond in training. It wasn't easy to arrive in this environment, a big club, the expectations are not easy to manage, but with the teammates, everyone helps me, helps the team, helps the new players and I think that's very important. I always try to aim high in the league. I always try to aim high in everything I do. I try not to set limits for myself and to know what I can do. I’m just going to work towards that as much as possible.” Determined to join Manchester this summer, Mbeumo may feel he has made the right choice so far: leader of the Red Devils' attack with four goals and an assist in nine league matches, the striker is the great architect of Manchester United's sixth place in the Premier League.
