Back in Serie A to evolve on the side of Sassuolo, Nemanja Matic returned in detail to the reasons which pushed him to leave Roma after the 2022-2023 season. The midfielder explains that he initially chosen Roma, attracted by the project and the presence of José Mourinho, despite a proposal of only one year. “I had received triennial offers, but I chose Roma for Mourinho and because I had been promised that a renewal would be envisaged in January if everything was going well”he said. However, in mid-season, no official discussion took place, which placed it in a position of constant uncertainty. “I had the feeling of being continuously during the trial period, while I am an experienced player and I deserved more respect”he adds.

The former reindeer and OL player also mentioned the difficulty of family instability linked to this contractual vagueness: “At the beginning, with my family, we did not have the necessary stability. »» A situation that prompted him to leave at the end of the season, frustrated by the unwarmed promises, and to join the Stade Rennais. “The problem was the people who promised something and did not hold it. I lacked stability and I was not comfortable with that. I did my best and it was fine. I felt the affection of the supporters, who respected me more than the club. Rennes struck my door by offering me a three -year contract, which meant more stability ”he explained. Finally, the Serbian veteran also left the Breton club six months later due to the absence of an international school in the city for his children, and joined OL in January 2024.
