Former Liverpool star Stewart Downing believes that Real Madrid coach Xabi Alonso, will “certainly” lead the Reds in the future.

Downing believes that Alonso will end up “certainly” occupy the position of coach in Anfield shortly, despite the success of Arne Slot in the Premier League last season. The Dutchman led the Reds to the title, but the former winger believes that Anso has also been envisaged, as was the current Manchester United coach, Ruben Amorim.

Alonso was praised throughout Europe for its success at Bayer Leverkusen, leading the club to an incredible triumph in the Bundesliga in a season without defeat in 2023/24. He is of course currently on the bench of Bernabéu, but Downing thinks that a transfer to Anfield is inevitable, in the long term.

Alonso will “certainly” lead the Reds

Downing entrusted to FlashScore : “I thought Ruben Amorim was going to take the job at Liverpool after Klopp. He and Xabi Alonso seemed to be the candidates of choice, but Slot arrived from nowhere and obtained the position.

“I think Xabi Alonso was undoubtedly the one they talked about and that they may have chosen, and he obviously had reservations. I understand why.

Alonso is currently preparing for the Liga season

“To be fair to Xabi, it was probably a good decision on his part. A young coach, if he had arrived in Liverpool and that it was not going well for him, he would have returned to square one. He stayed one more year. I know they did not win the championship, but they still have work to do. It was an exciting team to follow.

“If Liverpool puts himself forward now, looking for a new coach, I think Xabi Alonso would take it, but it is obviously too late. But I think he has a future. He will certainly train Liverpool one day. »»

Liverpool begins his Premier League season Friday evening, against Bournemouth. Real Madrid, meanwhile, receives Osasuna on Tuesday.
