De Zerbi, the scenario that no one saw coming

After only a season on the bench of Olympique de Marseille, Roberto de Zerbi could leave the Marseille city. The idea seems crazy as the Italian has conquered the velodrome, both sporting and humanly. But to believe Fabrizio Romano, generally well informed on the transfer window, by Zerbi is among the last two candidates retained by Inter Milan to succeed Simone Inzaghi. By his side: a certain Cesc Fabregas.

The interest of the Nerazzurri intervenes when Inzaghi, weakened by the heavy defeat in the Champions League final against PSG (5-0), is about to leave the club. Inter wants to start again on new bases, and the profile of De Zerbi seduces. A surprise, because the Marseille coach had still recently denied any hint of departure, saying: “I am happy in Marseille, I have not received any calls. »» But in football, the scenarios can switch in one day.

OM: From Zerbi already on departure?

It would be a blow for OM. De Zerbi, in one year, not only qualified the club for the next Champions League by finishing second in Ligue 1, but above all he brought a strong identity to the team. His agreement with Pablo Longoria and Mehdi Benatia seemed sincere, built on mutual trust. Going now, while he is under contract until 2027, and he has a release clause of 6 million euros, would ask questions.

From Zerbi, a unnatural choice?

Another amazing element: De Zerbi is an assumed tifoso of AC Milan. Joining the Inter, historic rival, is therefore not a trivial gesture. Especially since AC Milan had thought of him before choosing Massimiliano Allegri. Even if the call of Italy can be strong, this choice could surprise far beyond Marseille.

A few weeks before the resumption of training, the Marseille supporters oscillate between stupor and resignation. The man who gave his letters of nobility to the club could spin through the small door. If this scenario is confirmed, it would be a thunderclap for OM … and a cruel reminder of the chronic instability of modern football.
