The madness continues for Stade Brestois. Beaten in Barcelona the previous day, and outclassed by a major European team, the Breton club found its way to victory, its fourth in six days (!). This time, it was the scalp of PSV Eindhoven (1-0), a great continental reference, that the pirates went for.
Once again, Brest showed great solidarity, striving to keep their backs against a generally superior opponent (18 shots, 67% ball possession). Eric Roy’s men initially held the score, thanks in particular to Marco Bizot’s saves, and they found the fault just before the break. It was Julien Le Cardinal, following a free kick, who shot former Niçois Walter Benitez (43rd) from close range.
Brest holds its qualification
There was still one half to play, and Brest, having to be able to score the break goal, was still able to hang on, with some nice scares however: a post for Malik Tillman (55th), and a penalty whistled by M .Sanchez, but logically canceled after intervention by the VAR. Abdoulaye Ndiaye had his arm stuck to his body, placed behind his back, and it was first with his thigh that he blocked this Dutch strike (62nd).
So here is Brest fifth in this Champions League before Wednesday’s matches. According to statistical forecasts, the Bretons’ 13 points will be more than enough to secure a place in the play-offs. And with three more units, Brest could even dream of direct qualification for the eighth. So why not go and win at Shakhtar Donetsk in January, before enjoying a dream final against Real Madrid on the last day?
