Tuesday evening, Antoine Griezmann celebrated his 100th meeting in the Champions League in the most beautiful way by scoring in Atlético Madrid’s crushing victory against Sparta Prague (6-0). Substitute for the first time in two years, the Frenchman came on in the 59th minute before scoring a goal ten minutes later thanks to a well-placed right shot after a service from Marcos Llorente.
With this 38th goal in the Champions League, Griezmann reached 51 decisive contributions in the competition (38 goals, 13 assists). This match consolidates his status as the fourth most capped French player in the history of the competition, behind Karim Benzema (152), Thierry Henry (112) and Patrice Evra (108).
Far from the records of Benzema and Henry
Despite his exploits, Griezmann remains a distance from French Champions League legends. His contributions are much lower than those of Benzema (117 in 152 matches) and Thierry Henry (75 in 112 matches), while Kylian Mbappé, with already 73 contributions in just 77 matches, seems well on his way to overtaking his elders. Nevertheless, Griezmann continues to write his own story with Atlético, while rumors suggest a possible departure for MLS next summer.
