Brest, another performance in the Champions League!

Stade Brestois was able to keep the reigning German champion in check this Wednesday in the Champions League.

After two victories over the Austrians of Sturm Graz (2-1) and RB Salzburg (0-4), we feared hell for the Brestois, with a poster against Bayer finally looking like the European elite. Facing the Bundesliga holder, the SB29 once again did honor to its colors, holding out one of the continental scarecrows of the moment.

Executioner over the past month of Feyenoord Rotterdam (0-4) and AC Milan (1-0), Leverkusen found someone to talk to in Brittany, on the lawn of Guingamp. If the inevitable Wirtz opened the scoring, then benefiting from the generosity of the local defense (0-1, 24e), the Brestois were able to get back on track even before the break, with a superb volley from Lees-Melou (1-1, 39e).

On the provisional podium with Monaco

As a symbol, it is thanks to one of the main heroes of its historic past – a master of playing on the flank for five months and who returned to competition just two weeks ago – that this SB29 at strong character therefore resisted adversity of rare intensity.

On arrival, the draw certainly pleased the Bretons more than the Germans but the performance remained no less notable. While waiting for the evening’s matches, Brest is on the podium of this 36-team championship which is now the initial phase of the Champions League, in the wake of Monaco and two lengths from Aston Villa, sole and surprising leader with plenty of points on the clock (9 out of 9).
