A new refereeing scandal for Real

Leipzig was angry with the referee after their defeat against Real Madrid (0-1) in the first leg of the round of 16 of the Champions League.

Real were equal to themselves on Tuesday in the first leg of their Champions League round of 16 against Leipzig. Failing to be brilliant, the Merengue club was relentless by winning 1-0 in Germany thanks to a nice goal from Brahim Diaz after returning from the locker room.

The Madrid giant, however, came close to being penalized from the first moments of the meeting. We were indeed playing the second minute when Benjamin Sesko shook the net. But the Slovenian’s goal was ultimately refused following the intervention of the VAR. At the time of Xaver Schlager’s shot, which turned into a pass, the Leipzig scorer was covered by Rodrygo.

“There was neither offside nor foul”

But Benjamin Heinrichs was well offside. Above all, placed behind the Madrid goalkeeper, he seemed touched by Andriy Lunin. The German midfielder was therefore undoubtedly found guilty of an “offside infraction”: “A player in an offside position when the ball is passed or touched by a teammate must be penalized only when he begins to take an active part in the game (..) by interfering with an opponent, because (…) he performs an obvious action that clearly influences an opponent’s ability to play the ball. »

However, Marco Rose, the coach of the German club, was fuming after the meeting. “There was no offside, no foul. We do not know why this goal was not validated. We can’t know how the match would have gone, but…. Maybe the referee was a little nervous because it was his first match at this level. I don’t want to make a fuss about the referee. He made mistakes, that’s all.” he cursed.
