Napoli boss, Aurelio de Laurentiis indulged in some confidences linked to his search for a new coach last summer, to replace Luciano Spalletti. With a small tackle for Luis Enrique.

Always as truculent and never stingy with juicy declarations, Aurelio de Laurentiis has done it again. The boss of the Naples club spoke this Friday of the period during which he looked for a successor to Luciano Spalletti, coach crowned Serie A champion last season, on the Neapolitan bench. During the summer, several candidates were contacted and the manager had fun revealing some secret conversations.

In a long interview given to Corriere dello Sport, Aurelio de Laurentiis notably mentioned the candidacy of a certain Luis Enrique. Before joining Paris Saint-Germain a few weeks later, the Spanish tactician was ready to try the adventure at Napoli. But the process stopped due to a financial issue, De Laurentiis explained. “ I went to see Luis Enrique. He brought his representatives to Naples, detained me for three days and asked me for a lot of money. We even reached a near-deal, but then he said no because he wanted to win even more. »

Regret Garcia

A rather trivial explanation for this refusal from Luis Enrique. The current PSG coach was not the only one to be singled out by the Neapolitan leader who mainly focused on Rudi Garcia, despite his final choice. Aurelie de Laurentiis explained that she realized that her decision to hire the Frenchman was a mistake from the day of his official presentation. “ I should have made a bold statement and said ‘I introduced him to you, but now he’s leaving’. Because someone who comes and says: ‘I don’t know Naples, I’ve never seen a match’…I should have understood. »
