Big conflict in English football: the Super League will not be compatible with Premier League clubs.

FC Barcelona and Real Madrid celebrated Thursday morning the European Court ruling which gave them the freedom to set up a new European competition without the threat of sanctions from UEFA or FIFA. However, it appears that the Superleague will not be compatible with Premier League clubs.

The six English clubs that initially attempted to register (Manchester United, Manchester City, Chelsea, Liverpool, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur) immediately faced backlash, as well as pressure from the government to apply. They withdraw from the competition. Shortly after the court’s ruling, a British government spokesperson told The Independent that whether or not the Premier League clubs concerned wanted to participate in the competition, it would be withdrawn from them.

“The attempt to create a separate competition was a watershed moment for English football and was universally condemned by fans, clubs and the government. We took decisive action at the time by triggering the fan-led review of football governance, which called for the creation of a new independent regulatory authority for English football. We will shortly introduce legislation that will make this a reality and prevent clubs from entering into breakaway competitions of this type in the future. »

This obviously doesn’t stop the rest of Europe from entering the competition, but a competition without the Premier League’s big stars would be significantly weaker and would call into question the scale of the financial incentive.
