Lionel Messi admitted in an interview that MLS is an “inferior” championship to Paris Saint-Germain’s Ligue 1 or FC Barcelona’s La Liga.
In an interview with StarPlus.com, the Argentine spoke about his future in the national team, while admitting that his level of play could be affected by the MLS schedule and the caliber of the competition. But at 36, he feels this is the opportunity that best suits him and his family.
The Argentine has taken MLS by storm since joining the league in July, winning the inaugural Leagues Cup and the tournament’s Golden Boot. Even though MLS is not at the level of Barcelona or PSG, it remains a league that has the best talent and evolves with world football. Top players are shipped to Europe, while the league’s Apple TV deal gives exposure to all the teams participating. Now he promises to continue playing at a high level for his country ahead of the 2024 Copa AmĂ©rica.
“ I’ve said it many times and it’s a reality: I will always try to perform as well as possible and I’m the first to know when I can be there and when I can’t. I am also aware that I went to a lower league, but a lot of things happen because of personality and the way one faces the situation and the competition. As long as I feel good and can continue to contribute, I will (represent the national team).“
