AS Monaco won against Stade Brestois this Sunday for the 11th day of Ligue 1 (2-0).
At the heart of this strange campaign where the outsiders do not hold their place, AS Monaco continues to thrive. The Principality club suffered an unexpected hiccup last week, against Lille (0-2), but it gave the best response by taking over a tough Brest team (2-0).
The Monegasques still owe this success to their playing master Aleksandr Golovine. Omnipresent in the game, the elegant Russian attacking midfielder mainly turned the match around thanks to his vision and his quality of foot, all at key moments of the match. It was he who delivered a perfect corner for Zakaria’s header a quarter of an hour into the game, to put the Monegasques on the right track (1-0, 16th).
An XXL Golovin for Monaco
It was he, too, who doubled the lead to score his 5th goal of the season in Ligue 1 with a perfectly adjusted strike at the end of a school action (2-0, 69th). Monaco really needed a technical leader at this level to get rid of the trap set by Eric Roy’s team. Because as against PSG last Sunday, the Bretons offered a very consistent copy, and they lacked a touch of luck to make their highlights bear fruit, like the two shots that crashed into the uprights.
After making 20 shots against Paris, Brest hit 13 times on goal at Louis-II this Sunday. Insufficient to hope for better in this choppy and electric match, where tempers heated up again, the Brestois finishing at ten after the expulsion of Lilian Brassier in stoppage time (90th + 3). Monaco temporarily moves up to second place while awaiting the match of its neighbor Nice against Rennes. Brest is in sixth place.
