Despite Morocco’s historic World Cup, Reynald Pedros has been removed from his position as coach of the women’s team. He is replaced by the Spaniard Jorge Vilda, fired by the world champions.

The announcement came this Thursday. To everyone’s surprise, Reynald Pedros was removed from his position in the Moroccan women’s team. In office since 2020, the former FC Nantes player allowed his team to qualify for its very first World Cup, where the Atlas Lionesses created one of the big and beautiful surprises of the competition by advancing to the round of 16 at the expense of Germany in particular.

The main person concerned does not hide his bitterness. “The book closes and I am very disappointed not to continue my mission with the Moroccan national A team. But, so proud to have put this team on top of the world”writes the former coach of Olympique Lyonnais.

The name of his successor will make some people cringe. It is in fact Jorge Vilda, the former coach of Spain. Acquiring a very recent world champion is a huge sporting blow for Morocco, but it must be remembered that Vilda was ousted a few days after the World Cup during the Rubiales scandal. He was very unpopular with his players, who had tried to oust him a few months before the World Cup, in vain.
