Harry Maguire has revealed he received career advice from Manchester United legend David Beckham after being bullied by Scottish fans while on international duty.

The United defender was ridiculed by the Hampden Park crowd every time he touched the ball during the Three Lions’ 3-1 win last month, in which he also scored an own goal . Beckham contacted Maguire to lift him up after the match and remind him of the “great moments” of his career to help him overcome his disappointment.

“I spoke to David about three weeks ago after the Scotland game”, Maguire said. “ He contacted me, it was very nice of him and I really appreciated it. It means a lot to me. Throughout my career, I have spoken of David Beckham as someone I admired and looked up to when I was young. Unfortunately, I didn’t end up on the right wing scoring and assisting as many goals as him, but he was a big role model for me when I was young.

“It shows how classy he is to reach out and send me a message. It’s something I really enjoy. It was really touching. I don’t want to elaborate too much on the conversation, but what he did was remind me of the career I’ve had so far and the great moments I’ve had in my career. I think when you’re going through tough times, you need to look back to your past experiences and memories, what you’ve done in your career and what you’ve been through. Every career has ups and downs, especially when you achieve what I achieved, which was being the captain of the biggest club in the world for 3 and a half years. He’s been through this situation and knows what it’s like.”
