This Thursday, August 31, the anthem of the Champions League resounded on the side of Monaco. UEFA organized the draw for the 2023/2024 C1 edition at the Grimaldi Forum in Monaco, the last in this format with 32 teams before the increase to 36 next year. This year, with the disappointing elimination of OM during the play-offs, there were only two French clubs qualified, namely PSG present in pot 1 and Lens present in pot 4. And the Lensois finally had a more lenient draw than PSG.

Positioned in group F, Paris finally inherited what could be called the group of death. Indeed, the formation of Luis Enrique fell on Borussia Dortmund, AC Milan and… Newcastle. Three high-level teams that should be a problem for PSG. Add to that lively atmospheres at San Siro, Signul Iduna Park or St James’ Park, and you have a very strong Champions League group.

PSG assumes its favorite status

Present in Monaco for the draw with Nasser Al-Khelaïfi and Luis Campos to represent the club, Yohan Cabaye, former player of PSG (and also of Newcastle) and today sports coordinator of the training center, expressed on this rather special draw at the microphone of RMC Sport. “Selfishly, I am very happy to return to Newcastle. I had some very good times. Rediscovering the stadium, the fervor, the supporters… Seeing them again in the foreground is a pleasure. Now, sportingly, it will be two complicated matches against them. It’s the Champions League. But I’m happy”he launched at first before continuing.

“The three opponents will be difficult. Three different teams, three difficult teams to play. Three stadiums with a special atmosphere too. It’s the Champions League. Unfortunately, we fell on the most difficult group, yes. But being PSG, we have to play the matches to win them and we have to tell ourselves that the other teams are afraid of us too.
