For its big return to the Champions League, RC Lens will once again cross paths with Arsenal. The Sang et Or will also face Sevilla and PSV Eindhoven.
It’s a nice wink. For its big return to the Champions League, 16 years after its last appearance on the continental scene, 21 years after its last campaign in C1, RC Lens will cross paths with an old memory, Arsenal, against whom the Sang et Or experienced two of their greatest European moments.
We are of course referring to this victory at Wembley (0-1), against the Gunners, during the 1998-1999 Champions League, with a winning goal from Mickaël Debève, at a time when French successes on English soil were particularly rare. The following season, RC Lens once again crossed paths with Arsène Wenger’s team, in a semi-final of the UEFA Cup (the ancestor of the Europa League), where the Londoners made the law by winning the outward and return (1-0, 2-1).

To return to this 2023-2024 season, RC Lens will therefore be entitled to a good poster in a group which promises to be quite homogeneous but far from obvious, with Sevilla FC and PSV Eindhoven. By inheriting the Andalusians, winners of the Europa League, Franck Haise’s players avoided the very large pieces of pot 1 but they were not really spoiled afterwards, by recovering beautiful teams from hats 2 and 3. he adventure promises to be very beautiful to live for the Sang et Or and their supporters.
