The elimination on penalties against Panathinaikos, in the Champions League play-off return, is certainly a failure in the season for Olympique de Marseille. It was a first turning point – sporting and economic. Despite this disillusion, some observers prefer to put things into perspective by projecting themselves on the Europa League, a competition which seems more cut out for the Marseille club, used to going out from the group stage when it is engaged in C1.

Make no mistake about it: the course of Olympique de Marseille in the Europa League will not necessarily be a cakewalk. With the group stage draw taking place on September 1, Marcelino and his men can expect to come up with some big bucks.

Very heavy in the hat 1

This 2023-24 C3 campaign will be interesting for the forces involved. Pot 1 of the board is almost exclusively made up of European heavyweights, starting with Liverpool. Apart from the Reds, it also consists of AS Roma, West Ham, Villarreal, Bayer Leverkusen, Atalanta Bergamo and Sporting Portugal. So many teams that have proven themselves on the European scene in their recent era. Ajax Amsterdam could join this well-stocked list in the event of qualification.
