Manchester City have won the first European Super Cup in their history after their success on penalties against Sevilla FC.
After losing on penalties in the Community Shield to Arsenal, Manchester City had another opportunity to lift a trophy on Wednesday night at the Georgios Karaiskakis stadium in Athens against Europa League winners Sevilla FC. An opportunity that Pep Guardiola’s men, deprived of their captain Kevin De Bruyne and their handyman Bernardo Silva, did not miss (1-1, 5-4 on pens).
Jostled at the start by pressing Citizens, the Andalusians opened the scoring with their only shot on target in the first period through the inevitable Youssef En-Nesyri, author of a powerful header in the middle of two opponents (0 -1, 25th). The Mancunians have failed to convert one of their many opportunities during the first act, the fault in particular of a large Bounou.

Back from the locker room, the Sevillians pushed to take cover, En-Nesyri even had the ball 2-0, but the Moroccan striker stumbled on an imperial Emerson (50th). Dominated, the Skyblues nevertheless equalized following a light pass from Rodri for the head of Palmer at the far post (1-1, 63rd). The winners of the C1 then tried to force the decision at the end of the match, in vain.
Another header but this time it’s Palmer and the Cityzens for the equalizer! 🔵⚪️#MCISEV : 1️⃣-1⃣ | #SuperCup pic.twitter.com/tEK7P9AMLA

Silent during the game, Erling Haaland did not tremble when starting the penalty shootout, unlike the last Sevillian shooter, Nemanja Gudelj, who saw his attempt crash into Ederson’s crossbar. After their fabulous hat-trick last season, Manchester City won the first European Super Cup in their history.
