The championships are always looking for innovations. The generations follow each other and the expectations are not the same. You have to know how to live with the times and LaLiga has understood this well with the creation of this new competition. According to Report, the decision-makers of the Spanish championship wish to create for this season 2023/2024 a so-called “show” classification in order to offer even more transparency and visibility for the general public. It’s about increasing the viewer’s experience with more cameras and mics.

All ideas are good to bring more content. We are talking about half-time interviews with coaches, more player availability and for some members of the technical staff, showing more images in the tunnel that leads to the pitch, multiplying camera angles on different types of actions, recording sound during warm-ups… Everything is good to promote LaLiga, which is working in parallel with Netflix on a documentary that could look like the one on Formula 1, “Drive to survive”.

A ranking to determine the money to distribute

For this, we must also reach an agreement with the clubs so that they agree to open their doors. That’s the whole problem. They are rarely inclined to show everything, or so choose what they want to communicate via their social networks. But LaLiga has more ideas. To motivate them, it will distribute a jackpot of €130 million to professional teams, which will be awarded via a classification operating on a points system, like what can be done in Ligue 1 with the classification of lawns. This money would be taken directly from TV rights.

There will be a scale with criteria that will pay more or less. For example, if the coach intervenes regularly or if the club makes its star players available, he will be rated higher. In theory, certain media obligations already exist but are not always respected. For the moment, there is still no agreement between LaLiga and all the professional clubs, but the latest discussions are very positive. A next meeting on August 4 could act on this ambitious project.
