“He is irreverent, an ignoramus of football…he touches the ball as if he has already played in four or five World Cups.” Of all the plaudits heaped onto the back of Javier Pastore, perhaps this endearing quote from one of the greatest legends of the game, Diego Maradona, speaks best to his unbridled potential and future as a superstar. With his record-breaking transfer from Serie A to Ligue 1, the question is whether the Argentine playmaker can live up to the hype his price tag brings.

Relegated from Ligue 2 in 2009 Sporting Club Amiens took just two seasons to return to the 2nd tier of French football. Following a mid table finish in the 2009/2010 season SC Amiens rose to 2nd spot in the National after suffering just 4 defeats all season none of which came at the state of the art Stade de la Licorne home.

On the 27th May this year EA Guingamp won 3-1 at Rouen to secure a return to Ligue 2 after just one season in exile in the Championnat National. In recent history EAG have flirted occasionally with the top flight but Ligue 2 is where the Breton club usually ply their trade.
A native of the Breton region Jocelyn Gourvennec took over the reins at the Roudourou last summer and the much travelled midfielder made an immediate impact in his first managerial role at a professional club. Losing just 6 games last season Gourvennec’s style of football brought in the crowds with Guingamp finishing in the 3rd promotion spot behind Bastia & Amiens with the highest average attendance as well as most goals scored and the highest amount of goals per game.

It has been a case of everyone moves up a level in the sunshine island of Corsica as each of the top 3 French Leagues can boast a team from the Mediterranean Isle. AC Ajaccio surprised everyone by claiming a Ligue 1 spot for the coming season. GFCO Ajaccio, the Islands 3rd team were also promoted after amassing 102 points of their way to the Championnat National title.
A little less of a shock was the promotion of SC Bastia from the national to Ligue 2. Under the tutorship of Bosnian Faruk Hadzibegic (who is now in charge of Ligue 2 rivals Arles-Avignon) Les Bleus finished 14 points above 4th placed Strasbourg & 7 points above their nearest challengers SC Amiens.

France 3 – 1 Korea Republic (FIFA U20 World Cup)
(Sunu 27′, Fofana 81′, Lacazette 90′+1; Kim Young-Uk 59′)
“What was important today was to find the way to recover after the Colombia game, and the players did it to their credit.”
This was the summation of French coach Francis Smerecki after Les Bleuets completed an unconvincing 3-1 victory over a competitive South Korean side.
After a first-half that finished 1-0 to the French, it had appeared the match was going to be one way traffic, but a spirited second half display from a Korean side boasting some impressive attacking talents was enough to ensure that French fingernails were well and truly bitten come full-time.

Attempting to pick over the bones of PSG’s impressive Sunday performance against Boca Juniors for clues as to Antoine Kombouaré’s suggested approach became a somewhat academic exercise immediately that the line-ups were announced. With no Jéremy Ménéz or Milan Biševac in the squad and Mamadou Sakho and Blaise Matuidi given leave to view from the bench, a team of talented squad players supported the first string trio of Gameiro, Nene and Hoarau to a comfortable but eye pleasing work out.

The opening day of the Ligue 2 season saw Bastia earn quick revenge for last week’s Coupe de Ligue defeat at Istres with a convincing victory at the Stade Armand Cesari in a typically fiery encounter with last season’s National top scorer David Suarez back among the goals. Bastia began well against nervous looking opposition and took a 20th minute lead through Wahbi Khazri, David Suarez added a 2nd from the spot just after the hour mark to the delight of the entire 7975 crowd as no Istres fans had made the trip.
